Today I Took For Granted
January 25th, 2005
I take a lot of things for granted. We all do. After all, we’re only human. We expect things and we do not expect things to change, especially not suddenly. I once read somewhere that nothing happens suddenly, and while I fought in my mind to deny this, it was a true statement. Nothing happens suddenly, things creep up slowly, patiently, and silently over time so that it seems sudden.
What does all of this have to do with taking anything for granted? A lot, actually. We never really realize how important something is until it’s gone. When it is gone and realize that we didn’t say thank you or acknowledge how wonderful that something was, we regret it. I’ll say it again - we regret it. When you’re mindful of all that you have around you, all that helps you to survive or “get stuff done”, you are reminded to apply a little more care. A little care can go a long way. You are also more prone to see those “sudden” situations sneaking up on you and you are better able to nip it in the bud.
So, for today (and every day really), be mindful. Make a list of all the things you’ve taken for granted, then go through that list, acknowledge, and say thank you. Be aware of what you’re doing in each moment and be aware of how and what is enabling you to do it. You may be surprised at just how much you take for granted.
I’ll start…
Today I took for granted:
My family
My kitty
My hands, feet, fingers, toes, teeth, eyes, and health
My computer
My internet connection
My telephone service
My television and satellite
My electricity
My clients
My nifty electronic toys that help me plan, manage, add, subtract, and everything in between
My fridge
The food in my fridge
While my list is quite a bit longer than this, I do not want to bore you all with the gory details. Instead, I’ll finish up. For the first item on my list, I will call each of my family members and tell them that I love them. I will give my kitty an extra treat and tell her thank you for being a wonderful companion. I will honour my body and listen to it and say thank you for the ability to walk, run, jump, sing, touch, speak, and all the wonderful things it allows me to do. I will go through each item on my list and acknowledge it and say thank you.

March 11th, 2005 at 5:24 amI often come here for a bit of inspiration. Thanks for reminding me how lucky I am. I’m going to treat myself to time in the garden this afternoon, rewarding both myself and the wildlife I host.

I think I shall do the same thing myself today (although my garden is a stone one…I still have some potted plants…and a whole slew of wildlife)

June 14th, 2005 at 7:49 pmHey Teli,
Every day I take a little peek into what your blogs are all about. I must say I really like, especially this “Mind Body & Spirit” part. I just got going on Wordpress today, and I know there is a way to link to your favorite blogs. When I figure that out (hahaha) I’m definitely going to tell my readers to peep your compassionate words.
Peace
Jason Mofatt
