The Garbage Can Fairy

May 4th, 2005

You never know how a kind deed is going to come back to you. I love telling this story although it’s a very simple one. A lot of people hear this story and immediately dismiss it, but if you look at the details involved in it, it shows just how the Universe works.

A while ago, I had some left over magazines. They were given to me by a friend and they were all in mint condition. I didn’t want to throw them out as some people would consider them collector’s items and, again, they were in mint condition.

When garbage day rolled around, I waited for the garbage men to arrive and I scuttled outside to ask if any of them would want the magazines. Sure enough, one of them spoke up and said yes. Over the next week, I had found more magazines and like before, I waited for the garbage truck to roll around and I gave them to the ones who wanted them. They always graciously thanked me and went about their day.

Even when my dad came to visit, I remember actually hopping out of his car when we returned home from running errands and I noticed the garbage truck had just pulled up to my corner. My dad thought it was strange that I got excited about giving my garbage men magazines, but it was nice being able to bring some joy to someone’s day.

Fast forward about 3 weeks. I brought my bags of garbage out and dropped them into my garbage can as normal, except I saw that my garbage can cracked in the front. It was old and I guess it was just its time, but I still needed to get my garbage out, so I rolled my broken garbage can out as usual and went to run a few errands.

When I returned home, I noticed that it had rained while I was out. As I got closer to my corner I saw that my garbage can lid had been left open and it had been tossed haphazardly on it’s side. My heart sank because I had been so nice to my garbage men and they just left my beaten and broken garbage can on the side of the curb collecting water like that. They took the time to close everyone else’s lid on the block to prevent the water from getting in, all except mine.

A few days later, as I did my usual rounds, out of the corner of my eye I noticed something on my front porch. I decided to do a little more investigation. It was a garbage can. It was bigger and better than my old one. At first, I thought some work men had come and they had just left it for later, but after the garbage can was there for three days, I realized that someone had left it for me.

I still don’t know who gave me the garbage can, but I have an idea. The moral of the story is, you get what you give. It may not be in the same form, but it will be in the same spirit and it will be exactly what you need. Trust that.
