Random Acts of Kindness
April 24th, 2005
When I was in grade school (6th grade to be exact), we used to participate in what’s called IALAC week (pronounced, eye-a-lack). IALAC stands for ‘I Am Lovable And Capable’ and I loved IALAC week.
We were each given 10 warm fuzzies* each day and our only mission was to give 5 random people 2 warm fuzzies and say “You are lovable and capable.” smile and instruct them to give someone else a warm fuzzy and tell them they are lovable and capable too (with our parents of course).
Kind of like ‘Pay It Forward’ years before the movie ever came out :). It’s been a while since I participated in IALAC week, but since I still have a few warm fuzzies left, I’ve decided to do a few random acts of kindness on a grander scale.
I plan to mail 5 handwritten letters to random strangers with two warm fuzzies in the hopes of making someone else smile and feel lovable and capable.
What are the contents of the letter?
“I wrote you this letter to remind you that you are lovable and capable. You make the world better simply by being - don’t let anyone lead you to believe otherwise. If you should ever feel less than you are, remember IALAC — “I Am Lovable And Capable”.
This is not a chain letter, you don’t have to forward it to anyone and no bad luck will befall you if you don’t. This is just a reminder that you are lovable and capable.
If you want to, why not give the other warm fuzzy to someone who may need it and remind them that they are loveable and capable too.”
That’s it.
Why snail mail? People generally only receive bills and junk mail nowadays since e-mail has taken over. People like to receive something other than a bill every now and again.
Why handwritten? Believe it or not, we put our energy into anything we write down. If I am going to do a random act of kindness, I want as much positive energy as I can get into it.
Why? Because I want to make someone else smile who may need it. We are all connected, period, and you never know who’s life you can change at any given moment.
*What’s a warm fuzzy? They’re those cute little fuzzy things with the wobble eyes and sticky feet that you can buy at just about any craft store (and they come in multiple colors and sizes) - here’s something similar to what they look like.
It can also mean anything that gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.

The book is a great read too.
