The Game Doesn’t Change
July 12th, 2007
It’s astonishing how easy it is for one to lose one’s soul in internet marketing. So many e-mails flying around promising to reveal the next massive money-maker and so many, often contradictory, articles and reports promising the best way to earn money. Suddenly, it doesn’t seem so astonishing. In fact, I wonder how more people aren’t lost and disillusioned on this crooked road.
A while ago, I shared the ultimate secret to succeeding with internet marketing:
1. Find a niche.
2. Register a domain name.
3. Purchase a hosting account.
4. Build a website centered around the niche.
5. Add contextual adverts, affiliate links, or commercial products or a combination of all three.
6. Market the website.
7. Rinse and repeat.
That’s it. I wrote that almost a year ago and guess what’s changed. Nothing.
In case you didn’t catch it, there is no secret. The basic formula does not change although some of the methods may. There will be new ways to build a website, there will be new ways to monetize, and there will be new ways to market, but the foundation will not change.
When it comes to internet marketing, I prefer a holistic approach. I strive to provide value and help others because it’s what I enjoy. It’s also one of the ways that I earn my online living. So it breaks my heart when I see someone unhappy with their online lot. I just want to grab him and say, “Do what fulfills you.”
You could build a hundred sites on topics that you have absolutely no interest in and they may earn you an income, but consider the expense of maintaining them. It may not be financial and that makes it worse. You shouldn’t sacrifice your precious time, energy, and mental health on websites that suck more out of you than they put back in.
So, maybe it’s time for a re-evaluation; look at your websites, your income, and your level of contentment. If you instantly feel uneasy, something’s gotta give.
Switch up your mindset. Focus on what you find to be enjoyable whether it’s blogging, writing product reviews, building affiliate websites, gambling with AdWords, or making videos. Just about everything can be monetized and marketed, so there’s really no reason for you not to do something you enjoy.
“Dance as if no one were watching.
sing as if no one were listening,
work as if you don’t need the money,
love as though you’ve never been hurt,
and live each day as if it were your last.”
