Register Your Domain Names Now

October 11th, 2007

If you’ve been sitting on a good domain name idea for a while, now is the time to snag it because the overall rates will be increasing by about 7-10% on October 15, 2007. Although the increase in cost is for wholesale values, the most likely scenario is for the registrar to pass the increase on to customers; it’s only fair. Some registrars will only pass on some of the increased rate, and others will pass the full increase.

Even Namecheap (my registrar of choice) sent out a notice letting everyone know their rates are increasing from $8.88 to $9.49. It may not seem like much, but those dollars add up fast when you have tens or even hundreds of domains which need to be renewed annually.

Best option? If you know that you’ll be keeping a domain for a while and it continues to generate revenue, take the opportunity to register it for 5 or 10 years at the current rate. It may seem like a large outlay now, but look at it another way. You’ll save $4.02 per domain per decade. Still not much? (Hey, that’s a day’s lunch.)

OK, consider that you have 10 domain names, the amount you save jumps up to $40.20. Or what if you have 100 domain names? You now save $402.00. Get the point?

Plus, you could save even more money because the rates might increase again within the next decade. All right, I’m off to renew my important domains for another 10 years. ;)
